CARE OF FINISHES

LAMINATE SURFACES
Do NOT use acetone on laminates!

Your laminate desk is made with Surf X brand high abrasion resistant laminates that have a special protective coating. This coating over the color or wood grain gives the surface more protection than high pressure laminate kitchen counters. This is a very tough surface for normal abrasion and definitely not the cheap laminates sold generally in the mass markets.

Cleaning Laminates
Use slightly soapy water and clean gently.

Light Mars/Scratches
Gently rub with a soft cloth over scratched area to reduce the intensity of the scratch. Don't rub hard in one place or it will burnish the area and leave a shiny ?hot spot?.

Deep Scratch Fix
These are white because the scratch goes into the sub-layer.

Call us to order our TOUCH UP STICK. The stick consists of wax blend stick which will lay a colored pigmented wax into the scratch groove

Pen and Magic Marker Marks
These marks are laying on the surface of the finish. Use light rubbing alcohol and a soft, white rag, gently rub an area until you see the marks begin to disappear; stop when they are gone. Do not rub intensely in one small area as this will ?heat up? the finish, causing a shiny spot. Also, don't saturate the top in a large area or the alcohol will sit on the surface too long before being dried off.

Wood Veneer Surfaces

It's important to keep gritty residue and metal burrs from degrading the surface. It's best to clean the tops once or twice a year with warm, slightly soapy water (Joy for example) and a soft cotton rag to prevent build up of grit. Wipe with clear water and then a clean dry cotton rag. The water will not harm your finish (unless you have scratches going all the way through the finish).

We do not recommend waxes, Pledge or other cleaners as these tend to form a deposit on the finish that builds up over time and creates a splotchy appearance.

Sunlight fades almost everything, so don't put your veneer desk in an un-shaded window where it gets direct sunlight. Also, don't leave an object on the surface in one place indefinitely or you will get a spot at that place when you move it.  Heartwood cherry deepens with age unless it is sap wood, which lightens.

DEFINITE NO-NO'S

Hot Objects
Hot coffee mugs, casserole dishes, etc. can cause white rings on veneer surfaces. Use coasters or a magazine.

Ball Point Pens
If you use a ball point pen, consider using a blotter or pad on veneer surfaces, otherwise the pressure could leave an imprint (some persons can press very hard).

Sharp Pointed Feet
Machines or accessories resting on the surface should have a blunt, padded foot of some type. Avoid bare metal or sharp pointed edges.

Metal Burrs
If you have a piece of metal on the base of an object which has been scarred it will have a burr. Burrs are incredibly sharp and will scratch anything including bare steel. Feel the bottom of all objects with your bare hand before you place it on the desk top. If it has a burr you must put rubber pads under the object or file down the burr.
